What is Ames taping?
Ames taping is a method of finishing new plasterboard by reinforcing and filling the joints between boards, covering fixing points and forming clean internal angles and external corners. Unlike a traditional plaster skim, it does not cover the complete face of every board. The work concentrates on the junctions and details that must become part of one continuous decorative surface.
The condition and installation of the plasterboard matter. Board alignment, damaged edges, gaps, proud fixings, corner beads, ceiling height and the number of angles can all affect the preparation and finishing sequence. PAINTTEC assesses these details before agreeing the scope.

Preparation, taping and compound application
Joints are prepared and reinforced with the appropriate tape before jointing compounds are applied through the required stages. Internal angles, external beads and fixing points are finished systematically, allowing the compounds to dry correctly between applications.
The joint must be built wide and smooth enough to blend into the plasterboard face without leaving an obvious ridge after decoration. Rushing the drying sequence or hiding poor board installation under additional compound can create unnecessary remedial work later.
PAINTTEC coordinates Ames taping with plasterboard installers, joiners, electricians and decorators where required. This is particularly important on larger developments, high ceilings and detailed rooms where access and sequencing affect the result.

Most PAINTTEC Ames taping projects are completed using professional automatic taping tools from established manufacturers including TapeTech, Columbia and LEVEL5. Depending on the project, these systems allow joint tape and compound to be applied efficiently and consistently across plasterboard joints, internal angles and fixing points.
Automatic taping tools are particularly effective on complete properties, residential developments and commercial packages with extensive plasterboard surfaces. Detailed areas, difficult access points and final corrections are still completed by hand where required. We select the method around the boards, access and required finish rather than forcing one approach onto every area.
Surface preparation before primer
Dustless sanding with professional Festool equipment.
Once the jointing compounds are fully dry, every surface is mechanically sanded using professional Festool sanding equipment connected to a dedicated dust extractor. This greatly reduces airborne dust, improves visibility during the work and allows us to carefully check that joints, corners and fixing points are ready for drywall primer and painting.
Sanding and final inspection are included as essential stages of our Ames taping process. Any remaining ridges, scratches or local imperfections are easier to identify and correct before primer and finishing coats are applied.
From joint finishing to decoration
Dedicated drywall primer before painting.
When PAINTTEC carries the surface through to painting, we use a dedicated drywall primer on newly taped plasterboard. We do not replace this stage with diluted standard emulsion. A suitable drywall primer helps control the different absorption rates of plasterboard paper and jointing compounds, creating a more consistent surface for the finishing coats and reducing the risk of adhesion problems.

Projects up to approximately 300 m² are normally undertaken on a day-rate basis. Larger Ames taping packages above approximately 300 m² are generally measured and priced per square metre.
The quotation also considers plasterboard condition, ceiling height, access, the number of internal and external angles, detailed junctions, programme requirements and whether priming and painting are included. We do not publish a generic price that ignores the actual project.

Can PAINTTEC prime and paint the surfaces afterwards?
Yes. We can provide the complete finishing system. When painting is included, newly taped plasterboard is prepared and coated with a dedicated drywall primer before the selected finishing coats are applied.
Do you use diluted emulsion as a mist coat?
No. When PAINTTEC carries the work through to painting, we use a dedicated drywall primer for newly taped plasterboard rather than substituting it with watered-down standard emulsion.
