Two approaches to finishing walls and ceilings
Spray plastering uses a machine to apply a suitable finishing compound before it is levelled, smoothed and prepared for decoration. Traditional skimming involves applying finishing plaster across the surface with hand tools. Both approaches depend on a suitable, properly prepared background.
Spray plastering is also different from spray painting: one creates the surface for decoration, while the other applies the paint coating. A quotation should make clear which stages are included.
Where can machine application help?
PAINTTEC considers spray plastering for suitable larger wall and ceiling areas in new builds, renovations and development projects. Access for equipment, space for protection and a coordinated programme can make machine application practical.
For a small or occupied room, setup and protection may form a larger proportion of the work. The size of the area alone does not establish which method is the better fit. Existing surfaces, junctions and the required finish also need assessment.
Preparation still comes first
Plasterboard joints, corners and substrate condition must be addressed as required by the chosen system. Spraying a finishing compound is not a substitute for repairing a poor background or completing the specified joint treatment.
Floors, windows and adjacent finishes need protection. After application, smoothing, drying and inspection remain part of the process; sanding is carried out where required by the material and finish.
Drying depends on the product, application thickness and site conditions. For example, the Knauf Airless Finish product data sheet identifies temperature, ventilation, humidity and substrate as relevant factors. The specification for your project should follow the instructions for the actual product selected.
Compare the complete scope
Ask each contractor to identify the areas, preparation, joint treatment, finishing material and final condition included in the price. Confirm whether priming and painting are included and when those stages can begin.
Send PAINTTEC photographs or drawings, the project location and your proposed programme. We can discuss whether spray plastering is suitable and how it would fit with Ames taping and decoration.
