The Professional Kitchen Respray Process

A practical guide to assessing cabinets, preparation, protection, priming and finishing when planning a professional kitchen respray in Edinburgh.

The Professional Kitchen Respray Process

Assess the kitchen before choosing a finish

A kitchen respray changes the finish of existing cabinets; it does not replace the underlying structure. The first step is to assess the doors, drawer fronts, frames and panels, including their condition and existing coatings.

Damage, loose finishes, worn edges and faults in the cabinetry need to be identified before a coating system is selected. Photographs are useful for an initial discussion, but the final scope depends on an assessment of the actual surfaces.

Agree exactly what will be included

Confirm whether the quotation covers doors, drawer fronts, visible frames, side panels, cornices and plinths. Cabinet interiors, hardware changes and repairs should be discussed explicitly so you know what the completed kitchen will include.

Colour and sheen should be agreed alongside the practical arrangements: which components will be removed where appropriate, access to the kitchen and how surrounding worktops, appliances and floors will be protected.

Preparation and coating selection

Kitchen surfaces can carry grease and cleaning residues. Preparation needs to address contamination and the existing finish before sanding, repairs and priming are completed as specified for the chosen coating system.

There is no single primer or paint sequence for every kitchen substrate. The preparation and compatible products should be selected for the material and condition of the cabinets, rather than relying on the colour change to hide defects.

Application, drying and handover

Controlled spray application can produce a consistent finish on suitable cabinetry. Masking, access and the application conditions remain important parts of the process. The programme must also allow for the drying and handling requirements of the selected products.

At handover, review the agreed surfaces and ask how to care for the new finish, including any initial restrictions on cleaning or use. These instructions should relate to the actual coating applied.
